American science fiction and fantasy writer Steve Buchheit speaks sense on the Fukushima nuclear disaster and debunks some of the more stupid pro-nuclear power posts that have been cropping up in the US in the past two weeks. Link found via Jay Lake.
Never mind that the Chernobyl death toll figures circulating in the US are much too low and have been corrected several years ago. This WHO report cited by the Austrian public TV station ORF places the death toll at between 14000 and 17000 people. This article, from the site of a reliable private German news channel even puts the death toll at 93000.
And besides, the situation at Fukushima nuclear power station is still far from under control. (Link to a reputable German news site, because the English language sites tend to downplay the scale of the disaster).
