US continues to favour nuclear power

An Oregon based company, which has developed a mini-nuclear reactor the size of a semi-trailer, has just been awarded 226 million US-dollars from the US Department of Energy. Link found via Jay Lake.

Seen from a German POV, it is very difficult to understand why the US federal government continues to pour money into what is an essentially dead not to mention extremely dangerous technology* instead of investing in renewable energy. But then there is a massive push in many countries (most likely supported by the nuclear energy industry) to keep nuclear power around for another couple of decades and even built new nuclear power stations instead of phasing them out in favour of safer and cleaner power sources.

*Yes, the developers say that their reactor is absolutely safe. But then, the operators of Chernobyl and Fukushima also believed that their reactors are absolutely safe.
